I want my MTV

— Money for Nothing-Dire Straits

In order to make future posts make sense it is necessary to introduce MTV. MTV in the 80’s was much different than today. The concept came from British musicians who were already making visual videos to follow their. It was launched in August 1st, 1981 as a channel that played music videos for bands that were popular in the 1980’s. The concept came from British musicians who were already making visual videos to follow their music. The first song they had ever played was Video Killed by The Buggles who were part of the British new wave. Another thing to note was in the begging of most musicians being shown where white. Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean broke the barrier for black people as the manager of his record label threatened to pull their other musicians if they didn’t play the music video. Other artists such as Whitney Houston and Prince also broke the barrier too. They revolutionized how people perceived music as it added the visual aspects and of course. It opened the doors to many other genres, and it even brought the second British invasion. Of course bands like Guns n Roses had a hard time getting their videos aired during a time where people could watch it, most was played during early early morning because people tended to think that their music was evil and vile. It was huge during the 80’s however in 1995 to 2000’s “MTV played 36.5% fewer music videos” which was unfortunate as eventually it became about reality shows. It came a long way of course.
